Paintball!

Thanks to everyone that made it to Paintball on Sunday and to those who were too hungover from Concorde 2 the night before, but have nonetheless pledged their support for the charity.

Matching a large proportion of players’ fees, this Chapel Studios-sponsored event has raised over £300 for the Sussex Cancer Fund, so many thanks!

A great day was had by all in a combination of smelly mud and glorious sunshine, with the Chapel Studios posse making up most of the green team and taking on the yellows who were a youth side from Brighton & Hove Albion on day release.

We dispensed with still photography in favour of Duncan’s advanced head-mounted video camera technology so expect some very interesting footage in the near future!

Creative Catapult

James of Futurlab has transcribed his excellent talk from the Creative Catapult evening over on his blog.

Chapel Studios Facebook Group :)

Chapel Studios now has a group on Facebook

This was brought about mainly to organise the logistics of a Charity Paintball Match for any and all freelancers / independent professionals and anyone in the Brighton digital community that fancies a bit of fun for a very good cause (erring between either Sussex Cancer Centre specifically or Cancer Research UK generally). The event page, where we’re looking to set a date is here - *note you have to be logged-in (obviously) and a member of the Brighton & Hove Network to see this.

Chapel Studios Website

Apologies for the state of this wordpress-hosted website. Our new properly designed, developed and implemented website will be with you “asap” on http://www.chapelstudiosbrighton.com

Co-working in action

Ok, so maybe this isn’t quite as dynamic as the title suggests(!) but it still illustrates a point. Three people that met at Chapel Studios are now working as a tight unit on all sorts of exciting projects like all the applications / widgets and the funky design you see on www.artreview.com.John Watson of JWA Communications, project managed, while Nick Tong of Talk Web Solutions directed all the techie stuff and Bruno Rios Pereira of Bright Red Design produced application and web visuals.

Burning the Midnight Oil at Chapel Studios

Curious thing, Nick and I were in the studio together at half past midnight, working away as if it were the middle of the day. I swear the ambience of this place motivates me (and I say that as impartially as can be as the community co-ordinator) and others to achieve real satisfaction in our work endeavours, be they for simple commercial gain (obvious necessity) or to better oneself (Continuous Professional Development). I guess this ties in with my previous post on Chapel Studios being an ‘incidental incubator’ for growth. The key point to take away here I reckon is that that growth cannot be measured in increasing turnover / project values alone.

MOD 1-0 Media on Prince Harry media blackout

Prince Harry on deployment How refreshing to see that an individual who signed up for and trained for military service has been deployed

Difficult to find an interesting take on this with the mediastorm currently in progress. For my $0.02, I believe the MOD, in particular Chief of the General Staff, Sir Richard Dannatt, executed effective media control. Not easy to do in these days of embedded journalists alongside frontline troops and Ross Kemp wandering around a hot zone for the thrill of dumbed-down viewers. What makes this even more extraordinary is that this total control of the media and total blackout was enacted by a voluntary agreement, according to the BBC’s Jon Williams.

Predictions welcome for Playstation / SCE future

The visionary Phil Harrison has resigned from Playstation. It is no understatement to suggest that Phil was responsible for Playstation and SCE’s success, direction and leadership. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7263114.stm Anxious whispers abound, particularly for 3rd party suppliers and non-established independent studios.

Kika’s Birthday

The Chapel Studios crew turned out en masse on Saturday night to help Kika celebrate her birthday. Kika is an honourary member of the Chapel Studios community having been introduced to us by Bruno. The evening took the form of Tapas for dinner followed by utter chaos at Koba bar. Photos won’t be appearing here in a hurry.

It’s all about me (!)

From my first blog entry I said that I didn’t intend to maintain a separate blog, so I’ll be interspersing my stuff here and there under the category Ralf and the page I’ve just added which is a brief professional biography (to be expanded with some examples etc.).

It’s worth pointing out here and on a permanent page that Chapel Studios is a place for freelancers to come to work, run by freelancers. I myself am a Contract Digital Producer, Internet Marketing Consultant, etc. etc.
